Masters Olympia for Women (FitGems Version)

2012 marks the return of the Masters Olympia. There will also be Fitness, Figure, and Bikini as part of the Miami Pro. The masters' part is just for men's bodybuilding, though. While it's awesome to see some of the former top dogs competing in a "Who's Who" of legendary male competitors, it would be just as nice to see the Masters Olympia aim for the women of the sports.

Who would compete it it you ask? I'm sure there are various opinions out there, but our version would consist of a women's bodybuilding, fitness, and figure portion. Neither bikini or women's physique has been around long enough yet to have a Masters Olympia, so we'll hold off on that for a bit. The women that would be eligible to compete would be any lady that competed in any Olympia or Arnold up until 2010 that is in their late 30s and beyond. Hey, this IS a Masters Olympia we're talking about. Can't have any young guns (in age) for this show! In fact, we have even created a line-up of competitors that would fit the bill easily:

Ms. Masters Olympia
1. Lenda Murray
2. Vickie Gates
3. Betty Parsio
4. Denise Masino
5. Dayana Cadeau
6. Juliette Bergman
7. Desiree Ellis
8. Kim Chizevesky
9. Valentina Chepiga
10. Yaxeni Oriquen
11. Lisa Aukland
12. Bonnie Priest

Ms. Masters Fitness Olympia
1. Susie Curry
2. Jenny Worth
3. Jenny Hendershott
4. Kim Scheideler
5. Julie Childs
6. Julie Palmer
7. Tracey Greenwood
8. Mia Finnegan
9. Carol Semple
10. Mary Yockey
11. Heidi Sullivan
12. Adela Garcia

Ms. Masters Figure Olympia
1. Davana Medina
2. Jenny Lynn
3. Christine Pomponio-Pate
4. Amber Littlejohn
5. Monica Brant
6. Mari Kudla
7. Jamie Franklin
8. Mary Elizabeth Lado
9. Jennifer Gates
10. Jane Awad
11. Latisha Wilder
12. Tara Scotti

12 competitors in each division to make it an even playing field. Prize money SHOULD be higher than usual. How much is up for debate.

What do you think? Is a Masters Olympia for the women a possibly, or is it out of the question? Let us know in the comments below or post your thoughts on our Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/FitGemsNation.

C. Roundtable Questions

1. What does being a fit mother mean to you?
DF: So many moms let themselves go after having children. I like showing them that you can be fit after kids. It just takes a little work.
TA: Ultimate Dedication, Bordering insanity!
IR: It means being something which most strive for, being an inspiration to others. Showing others you can be fit and hot, and be mom.
MR: What I know from 14 years of parenting and 10 years in the classroom is - It is not what you say it is what you do. Children watch our habits closer than we give them credit. I did not realize how fascinating my competing was to young kids so that is a great benefit.
SW: Finding balance in my life. Taking time for myself while still being a good mother and wife.
MH: Practice what you preach to your children
KT: I want to lead by example. I want my child to see the normalcy in clean eating and exercise. Recently he witnessed me doing hill sprints up our very steep driveway and he joined in the fun then asked to do it again the next day!
DZ: FINDING TIME TO KEEP UP WITH MYSELF IN ORDER TO BE THE BEST MOM I CAN BE
JW: Teaching my son the fit way of life!
2. Does having a child who probably prefers sweets make it harder for you to stay on your diet?
DF: I’m not going to lie, I love cookies, ANY kind. But I can control myself.
TA: No. Not really, I like to feed her sweets actually. It’s sick… I know.
IR: No. Most of my family lives off of things I like: Pizza, cookies, snacks. When I have a goal, those things are a treat, and are not part of MY diet. I have enough self-control to avoid it.
MR: I make it a point to have a junk cupboard. It is my choice to eat the way I do and as a family we eat very clean, but if my son wants chips he can grab a serving of that too.
SW: It can be tough to feed them cookies and yummy snacks, but I remind myself that I can eat whatever I want…this is my choice!
MH: A little
KT: The only junk food in my house are the pop-tarts he eats. He gets fruit or marshmallows for treats. Unless I am completely hormonal then I do not have a difficult time abstaining from sweet stuff.
DZ: NO. I AM DEDICATED TO MY GOALS AND MYSELF. OF COUSE IT LOOKS GOOD BUT IT DOESN’T TEMPT ME. PLUS I HAVE MY KIDS ON A PRETTY CLEAN DIET. MY SON WOULD EAT BROCOLLI FOR BREAKFAST IF I WOULD LET HIM.
JW: No, why should they eat something I don't eat, but allow treats... It doesn't phase me
3. What's the hardest part about being a mother in this industry?
DF: This is an expensive sport. I really struggle with the cost. I feel that the money I spend may be better spent on my kids.
TA: Time, temperaments… I’m single, so it’s hard to stay devoted to the house, bills, animals pets, diet, training, and reading book, helping with homework and the elusive snuggling!
IR: I don’t in and of itself feel being a mother creates any more difficulty in being in the industry. However, some may see it as a negative, if you are looking to get into modeling part of the industry. I don’t think there are enough people who appreciate those that are older in this industry.
MR: For me it has not done anything but make me a better mother. I have more energy and an avenue to release stress. My son is very proud of me.
SW: Definitely the balance. You can’t do everything that you would like. There just isn’t time with having a family!
MH: Time management
KT: The hardest thing is finding the time to be a good mother and wife while working full time and making room for vigorous training.
DZ: FINDING TIME TO GO TO THE GYM. IT’S ABOUT A 3 HR ORDEAL FOR ME AND ALTHOUGH THEY LOVE THE GYM, IT’S A LOT TO PUT THEM THROUGH DAY IN AND DAY OUT.
JW: Having loose skin I didn't have b4 baby, so if I wanted to compete again I would have a disadvantage.
4. Is this an industry you would advise your child to be a part of when old enough?
DF: It will be totally up to them and I will support them 100%. I would love for my daughter to try fitness.
TA: Yes, She loves to pose with me. She hates she can’t workout with me, and is always curious about nutrition and how to get bigger muscles and have a body that is sound. My parents have a lot of life style related health issues, Stress, diet, etc. If I can keep her mind focused on health, life will always be easier for her. She gets into push up contests at school with her teachers and peers.. I’m probably more proud of that, than her amazing grades!
IR: Sure, if they wanted to.
MR: I would not discourage. I have grown tremendously as an athlete
SW: Only if they were interested. This takes a ton of dedication and I would never force it on them. However, if they showed interest, I would back them 100%!!
MH: Definitely
KT: Sure. Why not. As long as he focuses on the healthy nutrition and training.
DZ: YES FOR SURE! ALL THE WONDERFUL SUPPORTIVE PEOPLE MAKE IT A GREAT SPORT/INDUSTRY TO BE IN.
JW: The IFBB, no way, but being an athlete, yes
5. After having your child, what it harder or easier to train?
DF: I found it easier. I really wanted to get my body back after 6 babies. I was determined.
TA: I was never interested before. I gained 80 lbs with her, and kept gaining after she was born. She was about two when I realized I needed to make changes to be a better/ happier mom, and I was the only one who could change that in me.
IR: For me, nothing. It never affected my training. Training is part of my life and something I just do.
MR: I have always been very, very active.
SW: I didn’t start training until after I was already a mom. I am a bit of a late-bloomer in the industry!
MH: My baby is my step-son…he works out with me.
KT: I really did not train hard until after the birth of my child. I can confidently say that having a c-section does not mean you can’t have a 6 pack!
DZ: I HAVE 4 KIDS AND I LOVE TO TRAIN. HARDER BECAUSE I HAVE TO BRING 2 OF THEM, EASIER BECAUSE I HAVE MOTIVATION TO BE THE BEST ME I CAN BE FOR THEM.
JW: It is actually easier for me, I think b/c when I was pregnant I gave my body a break for the 1st time sense I was 7yrs old so it responded so much better.
6. How big a role does being a positive role model for your child play into your dedication to being fit?
DF: It’s what being a mom is all about, being a positive role model for our children. They see my hard work and dedication and it inspires them to work harder.
TA: Standing for something, Dedicating yourself to something, Pursuing dreams…Making changes!! And doing all of those as a Woman, a mom.
IR: I want to be a positive role model, I do that by trying to improve their nutrition and promoting staying active.
MR: Huge - I want him to see that women are tough, that overall health correllates directly to the fuel you feed it. He also understands the importance of exercise and loves to ski, bike, swim and stay active too
SW: HUGE. I want my children to value making healthy choices.
MH: It was one of the biggest motivations to working 7 years at getting my Pro-Card…he knows how I fell about giving up (NEVER)!
KT: It is not my driving factor but it is something I take in to consideration. Like I stated earlier, I want to be a positive role model, and that also pertains to fitness and nutrition.
DZ: A VERY BIG ROLE. WE EAT CLEAN, WE EXERCISE AND WE LIVE A FIT LIFESTYLE. THEY LOVE PRETENDING TO LIFT. MY SON PUTS ON A HEADBAND AND SAYS 1,2,1,2,1,2 LIKE HE’S IN A CLASS! IT’S VERY CUTE
JW: A lot
7. How has your training differed after having a child, if any at all?
DF: Can’t really say, I didn’t train like this before I had kids.
TA: It started! Lol It’s definitely hard fitting all the puzzle pieces together to make the day work right with training, nutrition, being home when she gets home, and finding time to spend together.
IR: No
MR: I never really trained until about 2 years ago and my son is 14 - for me it is a way to occupy myself in part so my son can develop his independence without me hovering too close. It's hard for mothers to have three kids grow up so having a personal focus helps.
SW: Again, I am a late bloomer so I have nothing to compare it to!
KT: I didn’t train prior to having my child. The next time I will have about 150 extra calories a day and workout through my entire pregnancy (I hope!!)
DZ: IT HASN’T CHANGED, ALTHOUGH I NEED TO DO MORE ABS NOW THAN BEFORE BECAUSE OF MY C-SECTION.
JW: Yes totally different style training, no more heavy weights, a lot of exercise with my son always keeping it fun.
8. What is your biggest suggestion for a mother who may be trying to get a handle on their child's diet?
DF: My philosophy is to always make healthy options available. When they are little it is easier to make them eat healthy foods. The challenge comes when they are teenagers. You can’t make them eat healthy. You have to be an example and have healthy foods available.
TA: I think explaining why we eat certain things is a good thing. She likes to know why fiber is important, and what foods build muscle. So when she doesn’t want to eat cottage cheese I tell her what the protein in it does, and why that’s important! Kids want to be healthy.
IR: Be a role model in what you eat. Try to prepare foods that are appealing yet healthy for your child.
MR: Your child will develop the eating habits you model - if you eat healthy your child will too.
SW: Don’t be overly strict. Let kids be kids and simply try to help them make healthier choices. Let them be a part of the decision making process or let the help prepare the meal.
MH: Teach them about carbs, protein, fat, fiber, grains and moderation. You would be surprised at how much kids like to learn when it comes to diet and exercise.
KT: As a Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist, I see first hand every day what obesity is doing to our entire population, particularly our children. I have taken care of 3 year olds who weigh more than 80lbs and 8 year olds that weigh 160lbs. It is grotesque and deadly. They have hypertension, diabetes, asthma, and acid reflux disease and they are dying….slowly. As a general rule, it is not the fault of the child. Children do not understand proper nutrition and it is obvious that many parents do not either.
I don’t buy juice. My child gets water or milk and an occasional Sprite when we are out to eat. Guess what! He does not know he is missing it. I serve whole wheat Eggos, and he does not realize that other people eat them with butter and syrup. He is content to have it plain. Recently my family served strawberries coated with sugar with dinner. When I politely explained that my child loved strawberries and did not need to eat them covered with empty calories, I was met with resistance. The typical response it, “He’s a kid. Kids need sweets.” Well, I obviously totally disagree. Don’t get me wrong, I do not deprive him. He gets the occasional ice cream or piece of chocolate. We serve cake at birthdays, but we do not typically provide this junk in our house. Can you tell you struck a chord with this question?!!
DZ: DON’T BUY IT!!! IF IT’S NOT IN THE HOUSE, THEY CAN’T HAVE IT. IF YOU GIVE THEM HEALTHY FOOD, THEY’LL GET USED TO THAT AND CRAVE IT. START YOUNG!!
JW: Why feed them stuff u wouldn't eat! Out of site out of mind. Monkey see monkey do, so get a grip on what you eat and watch your kid follow
9. What's the general perceptive of people after you tell them that you're a mother?
DF: I always get “There is no way you’ve had 6 babies.” People are amazed.
TA: I think people always know I’m a mother first! I don’t notice a shock value or anything!
IR: Usually surprised, especially when they know how old they are. I truly feel that weightlifting, and being fit is the fountain of youth.
MR: I am always with my family so not surprised.
SW: I seems to give other moms hope that they can get back in shape after having children. All I takes is discipline, dedication, and hard work. You gotta want it!!!
MH: I think it motivates people to see a competitor who is a mother because they realize if we can do it, they can too.
KT: They can’t believe I have a child. One of my newest role models in a 49 year old fellow figure competitor with 5 kids. Her body is so tight and amazing!
DZ: THEY CAN’T BELIEVE I HAVE 4 KIDS. 18, 14 AND 5 YR OLD TWINS. THEY THINK I’M IN MY LATE 20’S AND I’M REALLY FIT SO THEY CAN’T BELIEVE I’VE HAD 4.
JW: “Wow, I would have never guessed”
10. Has your child seen you compete? If so, did they enjoy it?
DF: They all went to my first show. They were very proud of their mom. But it’s not there thing so I won’t subject them to a 5 hour show. However, if I asked them to be there I know they would go.
TA: Yes- she was pretty excited, but it was a long day for her. She likes seeing me on stage, but what she really gets excited about is the fitness routines! As a bodybuilder we don’t get princess crowns… haha. She was disappointed for that.
IR: Both of my children have been to competitions. While they don’t like the long shows, they have both always been extremely supportive and I feel are truly proud of what I have done.
MR: Yes, at first he thought the whole idea was skeptical - but now he's one of my best supporters.
SW: My kids have been to all but one of my competitions. They love it and I love hearing them yell for me in the audience. It makes me smile brighter and puts me at ease!
MH: Jeffrey went to all of my shows in the beginning and was very proud of me…but after watching too many shows, he got bored (he was only 6 years old). Now he cheers me on from home.
KT: No. So far he has been too young. It is a long day. He is going to my next competition in June. He is excited….mostly because I told him he could get on the stage after pre-judging!
DZ: YES THEY HAVE. THEY DON’T LIKE WHEN I PREP, THEY DON’T LIKE THAT MY CALORIE INTAKE IS SO LOW BUT THEY LIKE SEEING ME UP ON STAGE. THEY YELL LOUDER THAN ANYONE IN THERE.
JW: No

D. Closing

What would you tell a mother who wants to get back into shape after having a child or children? Also any final words you have for your fans. If you have any shows coming up, you can plug them here.

Debbie Fowler
The best advice I could give is set a big goal, then set smaller ones to mark your progress. Nothing happens over night, it took you a long time to have all your babies so it’s going to take a while to get your body back. It will happen. I’m prepping for the Toronto Super Show in June. It’s going to be a great show. I’d also like to thank all the fans, husbands, wives, and kids who support us and put up with our contest prep. You guys are the best. I love you Todd, Nick, Gabby and Ben!

Tarna Alderman
I think fitness means different things for different people. I think your children, will have a sense of pride in who you are, and what you do if its the decision you make. I think as women and as parents we always feel guilty taking time for our selves. What it teaches my daughter is that I’m not just her mom. She gets to look at me as a dedicated bodybuilder, and be proud that I’m her mom too!

Ila Reed
Make a plan, and stick to it. Research nutrition and training. And don’t be afraid of weight training and lifting heavy. That is usually my biggest advice. Be consistent and you can achieve what you want.
In the end, if you want something, go after it. Pursue your dreams.
My first show this year will be Team Universe, where I will be making my National Debut. It will be exciting. I’m hoping to bring a much improved and competitive physique to the stage.

Melanie Ridington
I would say - make yourself a priority. Live each day as a role model. Show respect to your body by feeding it nourishing food and make healthy eating a cornerstone of family. You will be giving your child skills for a healthy life.
Competed Saturday May 14 - Kenai Alaska

Sandy Wiedmeyer
Seriously, if I can do it, anyone can. As I said you have to want it! You have to put in the time and be willing to make a few sacrifices. The end product it so worth it!
Thank you to everyone who has been and continues to be so supportive. It is so refreshing that I am constantly meeting new friends in the industry! You can follow me at: https://www.facebook.com/pages/Sandy-Wiedmeyer-NGA-and-IFPA-Figure-PRO/107796602629018

Mandy Henderson
Always make time for yourself. Your kids will learn how important it is to stay in shape and it will teach them about discipline. If you lead a healthy lifestyle, your kids will follow. It’s so cool when your 13 year old is spotting you on the chest press. It makes you realize you have taught him well.
Being a mom is the greatest accomplishment you can achieve and being a FIT mom is something to be proud of!
Thanks for reading and give your mom a hug next time you see her!

Kristy Tyndall
You have to be ready. You have to have your mind set to make a change. I think the nutritional component plays that largest roll. It determines how you feel which determines how hard you train. I like to say, you can’t out-train a bad diet.

Danae Zaitz
JUST GO! GET TO THE GYM, GET MOVING AND IT’LL START TO FALL BACK INTO PLACE. IT’S HARD TO GET STARTED BUT ONCE YOU DO, YOU’LL WANT TO GO MORE AND MORE.
THANK YOU TO MY HUSBAND, FAMILY AND FRIENDS. I LOVE YOU ALL!
I WILL BE COMPETING AT:
ABA NATURAL NORTH AMERICAN (WWW.NATURLAOLYMPIA.COM ) AUG 13, 2011.
NGA CHICAGO WINDY CITY CLASSIC (WWW.NATIONALGYM.COM ) SEPT. 2011 DATE TBD
MUSCLEMANIA MIDWEST (WWW.MUSCLEMANIA.COM ) OCT 8TH, 2011.
PLEASE SHOW YOUR SUPPORT BY COMING TO THESE SHOWS. WE ALL WORK REALLY HARD AND WOULD LOVE TO SEE YOU OUT THERE!
DANAE ZAITZ, 38 YR OLD MOTHER OF 4!

Jennifer Worth
I would tell them do it now and do it for you and them, cause you will set an example for them! You can't turn back what you teach them at a young age so set the bar high.
I don't have any shows but I do have a guest performance coming up at the Southern States in July, it will be my 1st performance sense 2006 and since baby! :) if you’re in Florida and you’re a fan please come out and watch... I can't wait for my son to watch me!!!!

Enough...is...ENOUGH! (Rant about Stealing at Recent Shows)

First off, a quick congrats to Nicole Nagrani and Brigita Brezovac on winning their divisions at the 2010 Tampa Pro this weekend! Them, along with Tina Chandler, Cathy LeFrancois, Jaime Baird, Vanessa Campbell are now qualified for the Olympia in less than 2 months!! :)

However, as awesome as that news is, I want to talk briefly about some news that has gotten around via Twitter and other places...stealing from purses, specifically from those of bikini competitors. This was said to have taken place at the Jr. Nationals and Team Universe, and now I read via Twitter that Dina Al Sabah (who looked great in her return to the stage, btw) had money stolen from her purse WHILE SHE WAS ON STAGE!!

Ai yi yi...

I have no clue if this is just happening to the bikini competitors, I don't know if this some kind of stupid joke or rib people are pulling, or there are those that really...REALLY don't like the bikini division to the point where they want to make a statement, telling them that "You don't belong here". I don't know what the motivation has been, but I can say this...it's a dumb-ass thing you're doing, whoever you are. I really don't see the point of stealing money from them (or anyone else for that matter).

Let's just say this IS a personal attack on the bikini division. What is it that you're trying to accomplish? Are you trying to rid the federation of the division by messing with the ladies' purses?!?! Get real, creeps. Whether you like it or not, the division is here to stay. It's giving ladies a chance to showcase their fit physiques without going the fitness/figure route. It's also bring in more ladies to the fitness lifestyle, and that's a good thing. Let's be honest, we as a whole are too damn fat, and it the bikini division can help change that, than I'm all for it.

My little challenge to your stealers is this...rather than using your talents to rip out hardworking bikini competitor, how about you use that talent to get off your asses and make something good of yourselves. Trust me, you might like the result a whole lot more.

I usually don't go on rants like this, but these petty verbal attacks on the division on message boards and the stealing of money and even suits?! This has got to STOP. Enough...is...enough. Bikini is a part of the NPC and IFBB now. Don't deny it. Accept it. Leave the hating be...

Figure Original to Compete in Bikini?

Over the weekend, checking my Twitter out, a particular tweet from Isaac Hinds on his Hardbody News Twitter caught my attention. This was posted on June 25th:

One of the original IFBB Figure Pros is coming back to compete in Bikini. She was top five in the Figure Olympia years ago. Guess who...

Needless to say this news sparked my interest. Kinda ironic since one of the first bikini pros (Stacey Oster-Thompson) is joining the figure rankings soon. And yes, Isaac (and Sioux) happened to break the news on that as well! I took a guess on it, and was...wrong. I think now...I might have a clue who's doing it, but I'm going to hold out until it's revealed, either by Isaac or by whoever happens to guess it correctly.

If you think you know who it is, send Isaac a Twitter reply to http://twitter.com/hardbodynews.

EDIT: Isaac has revealed the identity of the new bikini competitor. It's former top-5 place Figure Olympia finisher Dina Al-Sabah. Dina will be making her pro bikini debut at the IFBB Tampa Pro.

FitGems Nation Remembers Michael Jackson

I can't believe this weekend marks one year since the death of arguably the greatest entertainer who ever lived. For those that don't know what I'm talking about, I'm talking about the King of Pop, Michael Jackson. The minute he did, it felt like the world stopped. I mean people couldn't believe it. I couldn't believe it. But yes, he left this world a year ago, and with that he left a piece of Americana that can never be duplicated again. Hell, he left a piece of this WORLD that can never be duplicated again. Whether you loved him or hated him, believed in the accusations or not, the world never had anyone like Michael Jackson, and it will be a long, LONG time before anyone like him or his talent comes along again.

My question to all of you is...What is your favorite MJ songs? What are you favorite MJ videos? Favorite MJ moments? Exactly what were you doing when you heard of Michael's death? How has he influenced you? How is he STILL influencing you?

We haven't forgotten...and we will never forget. On behalf of FitGems Nation, thank you Michael for everything you gave for your fans and for members of this industry who you still influence today.  Thanks for everything...

Major Change in IFBB Figure

Pro figure competitors, say goodbye to the one-piece swimsuit round! Yesterday, Isaac Hinds broke the news on Hardbody News. For those that haven't heard about it, here's the press release on it:

FROM: IFBB Professional League
TO: ALL FIGURE COMPETITORS
DATE: Tuesday, June 15, 2010

SUBJECT: RULE CHANGE

Please be advised that starting with the 2010 Houston Pro Figure competition and all Pro Figure competitions after the 2010 Figure Olympia, there will only be one round in IFBB Pro Figure – the Two-Piece Swimsuit.

This is MAJOR news, as now pro figure competitors basically have a one and done deal. Bring it to win it, and you've got one chance to do it in. Some people have question the point of a one-piece in the first place. Now it looks like it will be a thing of the past. For those that for some reason stink in the one-piece round yet are pretty darn decent in the two-piece round, your chances of improving your ranks have went up a bit. :)

Personally I like the move for a few reasons. First, it's will be cheaper to do a show, as you won't have to get two suits. Second, with the addition of bikini and subtracting of the one piece and mandatory routine rounds in fitness, pro shows should (emphasis on SHOULD) even out in terms of time. Third, it forces those who slid by a bit in the two-piece round and let themselves shine in the one-piece round to step their game up and bring their absolute best, as NOTHING will be hidden from this point forward.

I know there are other reasons out there, but thosw were some that came out of my head. I wouldn't be surprised if this change in the pro figure division redefines the division to a certain extent. What are your thoughts on it. Should the one-piece have remained? Did the IFBB make the right move? Voice your opinions below.

Sharing a TenSpot with...Natalie Rae Ariel

I've been following Natalie's career for quite some time. Something tells me she's going to be special when the time's right. Natalie Rae Ariel is a proud crossover, formerly competing in figure and now a bodybuilder aiming to be an IFBB Pro. I'm very fortunate to be able to get an interview with her as prepares for what could be a major year for her in 2010.

Photos were provided by Natalie herself.

FitGems Nation: State your name and profession (fitness/figure/female bodybuilding/bikini/other).
Natalie Rae Ariel: Natalie Rae Ariel, Bodybuilder (& Cook County Correctional Officer)

FitGems: When did you first start competing?
Natalie: December, 2005 was my very first FIGURE show. October, 2009 was my first BB show.

FitGems: You used to compete in figure before bodybuilding. What did you like about figure, and what made you make the change to bodybuilding?
Natalie: What I liked about Figure is the look that was rewarded back then. Valerie Waugaman won the Overall at Jr. National’s in 2005. That was the VERY FIRST show I had EVER attended. I wanted to look like her and compete on that stage. I remember going home after that show making a commitment to myself that I would accomplish that. Davana Medina, Jenny Lynn, Monica Brant…their physiques were why I started working out that year. So I researched everything I could about the NPC and the diet and training and did my first show. I was hooked. After doing 3 shows and then Jr. National’s in 2006, I hired Elena Seiple. She taught me a lot, bring me into (2007) Jr. USA’s & Jr. National’s at MY BEST to that date. I was gaining more and more muscle the harder I trained and the better I ate. The reason I made the switch to bodybuilding was because, in 2008, when I took the year off from competing to focus on my ‘other’ career, Figure took a turn. The judging was worse than I had ever seen, NOT consistent, NO set criteria. They were rewarding ‘less muscle’ and ‘less hardness’. I had worked my butt off to gain the muscle I had in those past 3 years that I was not about to sacrifice any of it just to place well in figure. I did not want to look like the ‘new’ standard. So, with the help and guidance of Nate Wolfe we set out for ultimate condition, knowing I would not be the biggest (being 5’7” is rough) on stage. Prepping for Bodybuilding was harder than I thought it would be, but I know I have found MY place.

FitGems: Although you’re enjoying much success in bodybuilding now, what is one thing you miss about the sport, and is there anything that would make you return to it one day?
Natalie: I do not miss anything about COMPETING in Figure. What I do miss about the Figure Division itself, is the old “standard”, if you can even call it that.lol What I mean is, more muscle used to be rewarded. I cannot say if I will EVER make the switch back. I believe God has a plan for each and every one of us. If that is in His plans for me, then so be it. I will say this…I REFUSE to LOSE all of the HARD earned muscle that took me so LONG to gain, just to place well in Figure!

FitGems: During your figure days, you produced some of the best biceps the sport of figure has ever seen. May you share with us how during your figure days you were able to develop your famous arms?
Natalie: “famous arms”, hardly, BUT THANK YOU for the compliment. Back in 2005, when I first started to work out, I worked out in a bedroom that I made into a home gym. I started out using the Body for Life plan then just made up my own workouts after I read The Encyclopedia of Bodybuilding. Well, when all you have is a bench and some dumbbells, there is not a lot of variety. I did a lot of curls, a lot of different ways. They just responded well and are probably one of strongest body parts today, in terms of how much weight I can use with them.

FitGems: What is your strategy when you head to the gym? Is it mostly weight-training, mostly cardio, a balanced mixture of the two, or something else? How has that changed from your figure days?
Natalie: NOTHING has changed.lol I despised cardio then and I despise it now.lol I have LOVED the IRON from day 1, which is why I know bodybuilding was the right move  My strategy is always to TRAIN FROM THE HEART & TRAIN WITH A VISION(my vision of what I want to look like). My weight training is INTENSE and then there is CARDIO. Offseason, my strategy is weight-training and keeping to a stricter diet so that I do NOT have to do cardio!

FitGems: I was told that your nickname was the “A-Train”. May you share with us how you got that name?
Natalie: Joe Bayer from HDPhysiques, actually. He is good at making up some nicknames that stick! lol The A is from ARIEL and honestly…I don’t even know where the “train” came from…Joe???????lol

FitGems: What (if anything) would you change about any of the IFBB divisions?
Natalie: IMO, the addition of another class would produce more competitors. Like the 202 and under for Men. Like a 140 and under would be PERFECT!

FitGems: Which competitors (past and/or present) do you look up to the most for your inspiration?
Natalie: I look up to Elena Seiple because I learned SO much from her when she was my Nutritionist in 2006 and 2007. There are many who inspire me physique wise, but I will say that Angela Salvagno, Britt Miller, Kris Murrell, & Nicole Ball…what they bring to the stage, entire package wise, INSPIRES me! Last but NOT least…my fiancé Nate Wolfe. I look up to him the most because he has taught me more than I could have ever imagined someone could, about DETERMINATION, COURAGE, BELIEF, DISCIPLINE, and LOVE. I have seen him diet for a show and we have also dieted together for a show…he AMAZES me with his SELFLESSNESS!

FitGems: What are your future plans heading into 2010 and beyond?
Natalie: If all goes as planned, I will be competing at USA’s and North American’s in 2010. BEYOND….only God knows the answer to that, but I do know that I will continue to compete as long as I am physically able to, because my heart is in this sport for a very long time!

Once again, FitGems Nation would like to thank Natalie for taking the time to do this interview. For more on Natalie, visit her website at http://www.natalieraeariel.com, and for those that have Facebook, add her under NATALIE RAE ARIEL.

Poll Results for April-May 2010 and New Poll for Summer (June-August) 2010

Thanks to everyone that voted on the poll that was supposed to have been just for April, however I decided to give the poll another month of voting. I asked you How do you feel about IFBB Pro Bikini, with its first couple of shows in the books? 59% of you said that it's a great addition to the IFBB (which I agree with entirely),while 41% of you said that it's just another T and A division for the IFBB. I'm very surprised no one chose the option of "I need to see the rest of this year's shows to make an opinion". I can only assume that either you like the new division or you hate the new division. All I can say that the division is here, and it will be here for quite some time. Deal with it. :)

Now, onto a new poll, which I'm PURPOSELY extending until the end of August, because I really want to get your opinion on this one. The poll question for Summer of 2010 is...

Should IFBB follow the NFL, NBA, NHL, MLB, and NASCAR, and adopt an All-Star Weekend? Yes, No, or Maybe?

Some of you might be scratching your heads on this one, but it will make a bit more sense with a post I'll be doing about it within the coming days. I think you mike like what I have in store for you.

Motivation Article (by Lizzy Ostro)

There is one single factor that sets the top athletes apart from the mediocre ones. It can’t be seen, it can only be felt, and at one point or another we all have it. The problem is keeping it. You never know when it will return, and sometimes that can be a long time.

Motivation is the action of goal-oriented behaviors, according to Wikipedia. And in the words of Michael Scott, “Wikipedia is the best thing ever. Anyone in the world can write anything they want about any subject, so you know you are getting the best possible information.”

Moving on....

We all know how much easier it is to work towards our goals when we are motivated. We are constantly seeking motivation, and when we have it we are thinking of ways to keep it. So why is motivation such an important tool?

Being motivated is a fire. It ignites inside of you, and tackles everything in its path. In turn, our feelings of optimism and success grow. It is the alarm clock that pulls you out of bed for those early morning work outs, and the energy that drives your car to the gym after working long hours.

Many people seek out others’ help to get motivated and try to grab motivation from every source that they can find. The truth is, that motivation comes from inside. You will not be motivated until you are ready to be motivated. You can fake it and try to form it, but chances are, if you aren’t ready for it, it’s not going to stick.

Gather your wood and sticks and start building your fire. It might take time, but once you find the sweet spot, you will have a beautiful flame that will burn nice and steadily.

KFC and Burger King...What the DEUCE?!?!?!?!?!?!?

I've been looking at a bit of TV (when I get the time) and checking out the boards and blogs, and well...I'm about to be put on the KFC and Burger King blacklist for this. I'm not the healthiest person on the block, but seriously, neither organization is helping the obesity rate decrease with their latest promotions. Ai yi yi!

First, I'm going to rant on Burger King for a bit. If you can recall, they have new burgers on the menu called the Steakhouse XT burger. They are bragging that their burger is bigger than McDonalds Angus burgers. Let me repeat this again, THEY ARE BRAGGING THAT THEIR BURGER IS BIGGER THAN MCDONALDS'S ANGUS BURGERS!!! I had a McD's Angus burger once...ONCE...and can tell you firsthand they are no joke. To say that your burger is bigger than that of the Angus burger is basically telling me the following things: "Our burger has a better chance of clotting your arteries than McDonalds" or "Our burger will guarantee you to gain more fat than McDonalds". This might be good for a refeeding after a contest, but seriously, I think if you look at the whole thing, there's more harm than good. Even they're making it well known that their new burger, the Buck Double, is bigger than the McDouble. Are you begging for heart problems here, people?! REALLY?!?!

Now for KFC. I got a bone to pick with them on a couple of things. One, the Double Down sandwich. Two FRIED chicken fillets, bacon (which has GREASE), and two slices of cheese...you are BEGGING for a heart attack, people. Again, this might be alright for a refilling after a show. Might. But that doesn't make me as ill as what their doing as their latest promotion. They are teaming up with the Susan B. Komen For The Cure Foundation where 50 cents for each bucket sold will go to breast cancer research. Will Brink brought up some very valid points over at Siouxcountry, so I won't repeat them there (Go to the link and give your input on it). While their hearts seem to be in the right place, the idea of giving back to fight breast cancer by buying a bucket of greased chicken that can possibly lead to cancer if too much is consumed is stupid. Not kinda or sorta stupid, just flat-out stupid.

Yeah, yeah, I know people will eat whatever they want, but that's the darn problem. If you actually stopped to think about it, it's things like this that are making the obesity problem worse rather than better. Maybe it's just me ranting, but isn't it about time that people, not just those in the industry, wake up and take charge in their lives. If you think I'm little steamed over this, just wait til I talk about how these fast-food places are trying to be healthier with their "healthy" options. I will have the entire fast food society on my back when I'm finished! LOL. :)

What's your take on the latest KFC and Burger King promotions? Am I speaking some sense, or have I lost my mind? Sound off in the comments below.

Uncovering the Myths #1: Bikini Girls Don't Work Hard (by Lizzy Ostro)

Since being introduced to NPC, bikini has gotten a mixed reaction from all types of competitors and spectators.

First of all, many figure girls(not all of them) really look down at the bikini division. They think it is the "easy" way to compete and that it isn't a real sport. Alternatively, there are many girls that saw the bikini division open up and just think "oh I want to do that!!" These girls entered without really being into fitness. They had pretty good genetics and wanted to get on stage in a bikini and flaunt their asses around.(Hey, I'm just being honest.) The bikini "look" is a fit, toned body, that isn't as dried out as a figure girl. YES, you should have some muscle and YES you should be lean, but you just don't want to have as much muscle as the figure girls or be quite as lean. I truly think the division should be called fitness model, because bikini gives the impression that I am going to step on stage in a white t-shirt and have a hose spraying me while I pretend I just realized I forgot to rub all my lotion in and, what better time than now?

THESE are the girls that give the sport a bad rap. These are the girls that don't train much, and don't really follow the healthy lifestyle. They walk on stage and stick their boobs and ass out as far as possible, hoping to swoon the judges. No wonder there are so many haters on bikini! What really makes me angry is when these girls actually PLACE. But that topic is for another day....

I'm here to give you an inside view of a REAL bikini girl. The kind of bikini competitor that this division was made for. The girl that works her ASS off and lives the true fitness lifestyle. The girl that gives up drinking and makes sure to get her 8 hours of sleep per night. A girl that says no to happy hour because she has her 4 oz of chicken and broccoli waiting for her. Let me take you through the life of a real bikini competitor. There are MANY of them out there, but it's the one's who play a stripper on stage that ruin the name for everyone.

-The alarm clock goes off at 5:30AM. I don't have to be at work until noon, but it's time to start the day off right. I cook my egg whites and chow down on my oats. After all, I'm starving when I wake up. I throw on my work out clothes, check e-mail and head to the gym. It's time to train!!

-I get to the gym and hop on the treadmill to warm up a little bit. It's back day, so while I'm warming up, I imagine my workout and what exercises I'm going to do. I think about the rep count. Supersets today? Maybe drop sets? What about both? Sounds good to me.

After a 5-10 minute warm up, I glove up and get my head in the zone. I head to the Lat Pulldowns. I do a few warm up sets and then get to work. 10 reps. I can barely get the last two, but I groan and push through them. Drop the weight by a third and do 6-8 more reps. I'm already out of breath. A quick sip of water and I'm ready for cable rows. 4 sets of the super set and I'm ready for the next.

-After I finish, usually about an hour, it's time for cardio. I walk right past the elliptical and onto the stair mill. Set it up at level 9-10 and I'm ready to camp out for about 45 minutes. Ipod is doing it's job, and I'm pushing myself mentally. Mantras and quotes are buzzing through my head and I'm thinking about what I'm going to eat after my workout. More egg whites? Chicken? Lean ground turkey? What veggies do I want? Nuts or avocado?

-The rest of the day I just have to focus on nutrition. The workout is done and now I just have to make sure I eat at the right times and that I'm eating the right foods/amounts. For some, the workout is the hardest part. For others, like myself, the diet is the hardest part. I'm dieting down for a show, so I'm not eating for energy. I'm eating to get leaner. This equates to HUNGER. I do my best to combat the hunger. Extra veggies, lots of water, gum. If that doesn't work, I go through competitor pictures and imagine what I will look like come show time.

Before I know it, I'm leaving work and ready to go home to eat my last meal of the day, do more work and finally get to bed. It's Friday night and my friends are all going out tonight. Sometimes I might say yes, but I have an early workout tomorrow and I need my sleep. I turn them down, drink my protein shake and get ready for bed. It's 9pm, and this day is done. I am one day closer to my goals. "You can do this," I tell myself and slip into dreamland.

If I hear one more person tell me that a bikini girl doesn't work hard, I might just have to challenge them to a push up contest. I'm not someone that likes to argue with people, I'd rather just prove them wrong. I'm here to prove to all of you that think that REAL bikini girls don't work hard, that you are so very wrong. There are hundreds of bikini competitors just like me that work their butts off, and it's time that we are made known. After all, WE are who this division is about.

Let's keep it classy ladies, we've got a division to represent.

Uhh...Jillian?! Babies DON'T ruin bodies...Just ask OUR ladies! :)

I was going through the news on Yahoo like I usually do, and I came upon an article about some controversial comments made by Jillian Michaels. For those that don't know who I'm talking about (if you have a TV, how could you not?!), she's known as TV's Toughest Trainer for NBC's The Biggest Loser. The thing that made it controversial was the fact that she didn't want children because of what it would do to her body. I won't quote what she said; I'll let you look at the link for yourself.

http://tv.yahoo.com/blog/jillian-michaels-criticized-for-antipregnancy-comments--1178

Uhh...I will never know how having a baby will affect your figure (I'm male, for those that don't know), but I can say from some of my fitness friends that childhood is NOT the end of your body. You CAN get your figure back. Heck, some seem to thrive better AFTER having a child. There's a lot of examples out there, here's a few that come to mind.

IFBB Figure Pro Christine Pomponio-Pate became pregnant with her first child in 2007, and gave birth to Riley sometime after Christmas that year. Nearly two months later, she lost all of her baby weight (and btw, she didn't have much to lose thanks to her eating habits and workout routine...during labor.) She has went on to do big things, and will go on to even bigger things, if you've all been paying attention to the recent FitGems posts on Christine.

Last year's FitGems FitMom winner, Niki DelGrosso, is a mother of TRIPLETS and is competing her heart out even to this day of one day achieving her pro card.

And don't even get me started on Tanya Merryman and Jennifer Gates. Both women have children and have worked hard to hold top honors in their organizations. Tanya became the first mother to win the Fitness America overall title, and Jennifer became the first mother to win an Olympia championship (from ANY division). Yeah, to me, I think this is one of those times that I think Jillian MIGHT have put her foot in her mouth. For those wondering, this is NOT a diss at her whatsoever, just my own personal take on the matter.

So, what do you think? Do you agree or disagree with what Jillian had to say? Sound off in the comments below.

2010 Arnold Selection FitChat

Hope everyone had a great Christmas yesterday!

As you all know, the 2010 Arnold list was posted this past Monday, giving many IFBB competitors a great Christmas present. I know there are those that have their own thoughts (and complaints) about who got invited, who didn't get invited, who should or should have NOT got invited, etc. So...I'm going to have an open forum to discuss all that. On Januray 8th at 12 Noon Eastern Time, I'll be hosting a 2010 Arnold Selection FitChat, where we'll be discussing those things, as well as everyone's picks for the division. If this FitChat is anything like the one that was held earlier this month regarding the 2009 Year in Review, there's no telling how this one will turn out to be! :)

http://www.fitgemsnation.net/page/fitchat-2010-arnold-selection

Hope to see you at the FitChat in a couple of weeks!

FitChat (2009 Year in Review) Recap

Wow...what a FitChat that took place! From the bottom of my heart, thank you to everyone that participated in this special event. Click on the box below to view what took place this afternoon:

We will have another one sometime in 2010, regarding the 2010 Arnold. I'll let you know a date closer to time. Look for it to be early January.
