2010 Ms. International Results (Iris In a Class of Her Own: Everyone Else Fighting for Runner-Up)

Let's be completely honest here, everyone that was fighting for the Ms. International title was fighting to see who would end up being the runner-up...well, that was the case the minute Iris Kyle stepped on stage during prejudging. This woman seems to have absoultely no weaknesses when it comes to her conditioning, which is second to none in the business. She could seriously give some of the male bodybuilders a run for their money in terms of conditioning. She's that good. With this win, she now has the record for most Ms. International titles with five. Don't be surprised if she topples her own record next year with a sixth title.

Yaxeni Oriquen, another multi-time Ms. International Champion, took runner-up honors. She was smaller than she's been in previous competitions, but still looked great nethertheless. Apparently it seems like Yaxeni has taken Dayana's spot as Iris's biggest competition. We will see what happend when they clash again at the Olympia later on this year.

Third place went to Debi Laszewski. Debi has been coming into her own as of late, as last year she was the Ms. International Runner-Up, and 3rd Place at the Olympia last year as well, her highest placing to date at that contest. If she keeps this up, then she just might...JUST MIGHT..be able to challenge Yaxeni and Iris for female bodybuilding's top honors.

Lisa Aukland took fourth place, keeping her top 5 streak in tact for what has gone on for quite some time. She's always a major threat heading into a major contest, and almost a surefire bet in a open contest.

Betty Parsio continues her own personal streak by placing fifth. I was told that she was the most vascular of the bunch. Much like Lisa, she's a serious threat wherever she goes. As she gets older, she seems to get better in every competition she's in...and she's been in quite a bit of competitions.

Rounding out the top 6 was Dayana Cadeau. While she no longer seems like the thorn to Iris's side as far as championship threat is concerned, Dayana can still go with the best of them, and is among the most elegant of any female bodybuilder our there today. This might be a pet peeve of mine, but I don't think it would hurt for Dayana to smile just a little bit more. That's just me though.

All six ladies will get the chance to showcase their stuff again in September, as they qualified for the 2010 Ms. Olympia.

Rest of the Best:
Zoa Linsey made a great Arnold debut, placing 7th. I was told that Zoa was one of the coolest people to be around at the entire Arnold. Zoa strikes me as someone who's humble and doesn't let success get to her head. That kind of attitude will take her far in life. :) Alina Popa made her Arnold debut as well, and placed 8th. More fine-tuning and she could go places as well. Elena Shportun, last year's Arnold Amateur Women's Bodybuilding champion placed in a respectable 9th place, while Brenda Raganot rounded out the top 10. Antoinette Thompson, Jeannie Paparone, Dena Westerfield, and Mah Ann Mendoza rounded out the Ms. International field.

2010 Phoenix Pro Female Bodybuilding Results (Yaxeni is Queen; Betty is Ageless; Zoa Makes a Statement)

Yaxeni Oriquen kicks off the 2010 female bodybuilding season on a high note with a win at the first-ever Phoenix Pro show and a major statement heading into the 2010 Arnold. She had it all: muscularity, detail, and charisma. As Yaxeni is a multiple Ms. International champion, expect her to take this win and build some momentum heading into Columbus in less than two weeks.

Betty Parsio, the ageless competitor, took the runner-up spot and also make a strong case for the Arnold. It seems like the older she gets, the better she gets. Fun fact by Jason Lan (Siouxcountry), both Yaxeni and Betty have combined to compete in over 70 pro shows!! That is absoultely insane!

While Yaxeni and Betty were very impressive, it was the person that took 3rd place that is getting a lot of praise, and it considered by many to becoming the next big thing in women's bodybuilding: Zoa Linsay. She won the 2009 North American Overall Women's Bodybuilding title and has been a favorite in Siouxcountry for quite some time. Many predicted big things from her after she won her pro card, due to not only being a talented competitor, but she's someone who deeply cares about the SPORT of women's bodybuilding. When she was not called for 5th or 4th place, Zoa was beaming, as she knew one thing without question: She was 2010 Olympia bound. As someone's who's a big fan of hers, she definitely deserved the honor of competing among the best in the world.

Jeannie Paparone and Dena Westerfield rounded out the top five, respectively at 4th and 5th place. Both ladies were great, but maybe needed a bit more mass to keep up the the top three. Colette Nelson placed 6th, Antoinette Thompson and Diana Stanback both tied for 7th, Gayle Moher was 9th, Akila Pervis was 10th, Myriam Bustamente was 11th, and Maria del Carmen Segura was dead last. From what I've heard and saw, Aklia was a tad too soft for her pro debut, and Maria carries a LOT of muscle on her, but unlike those such as Zoa, Heather Armbrust, and Iris Kyle (who carry a lot of muscle), her muscle doesn't flow, thus hurting her in the placings. If she can adjust it, then she could cause some serious damage in the pro circuit.

New Elite: Natalie Ariel

Nataile Rae Ariel began her career in the fitness industry as a figure competitor. In 2006, she competed at the Jr. Nationals. The following year, under the direction of new IFBB Pro Elena Seiple, she made an amazing transformation on her body, and many people began to notice, especially Joe Bayer of HDPhysiques. He saw a star and arrange an awesome photo/video shoot that has made her among the most popular models on the site. She is not only built like a tank, but she's very strong as well. She isn't called the "A-Train" for nothing. Her strength and ability to grow muscle fast, as well as the new figure guidelines, played a key role in her switch to bodybuilding.

Many were anticipating her arrival in the bodybuilding world, and she did not disappoint whatsoever. She made her bodybuilding debut at the 2009 NPC Western Michigan and won the middleweight class and overall women's bodybuilding title. Apparently, Natalie made the right decision in crossing over from figure to bodybuilding. Next up for her is the 2009 Ironman in Chicago this Saturday. If this keeps up, look for her to do some serious damage in the IFBB when (not if) she earns her pro card in the years (by that I mean, two, three at the most) to come.

This was something that I should have touched on earlier, but better late than never, right?!

My site is no super-site by any means of the imagination, nor is the site meant to be one. However, the FitGems Nation tries to meet the needs of everyone there, while attempting to stay positive and respectful to everyone.

Fitness TV Shows?!?! Hmmm...

What is your favorite fitness show of all time, and who would you like to see have one in the future? This is something I've been thinking about for quite some time now.

My favorite of all time is Kiana's Flex Appeal. She was one of the ladies that helped make women have muscles acceptable in the mainstream world. For you Kiana fans out there, she's on ESPN Classic every weekday morning (Monday-Friday) at 7am Eastern/6am Central.

As far as who could have a show of their own? Here's what I posted on Siouxcountry when I brought up the same topic eons ago:

Jennifer Gates: inspiration to mommies everywhere.
Christine Pomponio-Pate: see Jennifer. Plus she's part Italian. I could see her as the "Italian Kiana Tom". LOL.
Julie Shipley-Childs: a cancer survivor who overcame a good deal to be a top star in the fitness world.
Elanie Goodland: a mom and grandma and looks INCREDIBLE! If that doesn't say "inspirational", I don't know what does!
Adela Garcia: An inspiration...and who doesn't like Latinas?

I asked After a year in effect, do you consider the new figure guidelines a success or failure? 66% of you said that it was a failure, while 33% said that it was a success. Agree? Disagree? Leave a comment below and let us know what you think.

This month's question is: Do you have high hopes for the bikini division? Personally, if there anything like the overall winner of the Arnold Amateur (Ali Sonoma), then I think it's gonna be a nice addition to the NPC and IFBB. But that's just my opinion.

WOMEN'S BODYBUILDING LIIIIIIIIIIVVVES!!!

You doubt the power of the fans? You doubt female bodybuilding exist? You think it's dying? How about you tell the folks at Siouxcountry and Unreal Muscle that? Both sites (as well as its members) went above and beyond the call of duty to not only make sure that Tampa would have female bodybuilding in 2010, but in the process, they were able to help bring it back for this year as well. Here's the official statement from Tim Gardner, the promoter of the Tampa show:

2009 REINSTATEMENT CONFIRMED

It was quite the painful dilema on March 17th to publically announce that I would have to cancel the IFBB female bodybuilding division from the 2009 IFBB Tampa Pro Bodybuilding Weekly Championships' schedule. After the announcement reached the bodybuilding community, a few individuals reached out to me and asked what could be done to bring female bodybuilding back to Tampa in 2010. I simply replied that just that particular division alone budgets out to $12,000 which does not include any costs of the venue, judges, stage set, hotel, advertising, transportation, trophies, etc. and that I would require it by December of 2009 to inform the IFBB office of my 2010 intentions.

Two weeks later, we fast forward to what has miraculously transpired to only a short ten days of effort to raise, collect and dedicate not $12,000 but $17,000 to the IFBB female bodybuilding sponsorship of our Tampa production.

I know what you are thinking, April's Fools, right? As surreal as this seems, this is 100% fact. With IFBB Pro Debbie Bramwell at the helm, siouxcountry.com, photographer John Hawley and approximately twelve individuals plus Ed and Betty Pariso as its supporting cast shot out of the gates by way of paypal to pledge $3,400. Great pace for a December '09 target date! Lo and behold, I wake up on Saturday the 28th to an anonymous email stating that his website community, unrealmuscle.com would contribute the balance of $8,600 and asked would that solidify a 2010 Tampa event? I replied that I would inform Mr. Manion of our intentions and start planning for 2010. Later in the day a second email appears asking if the 2009 female portion could be reinstated since the sponsorship budget was covered so early and also if additional funds were raised if it were possible to be added to the female bodybuilders' prize money? Again, another reply of I will inform Mr. Manion and we will also have to confirm the sponsorship deposits before making a public announcement of that magnitude.

Ladies and gentlemen of our vast and prestigious IFBB and NPC family, I am so honored to report today that the 2009 IFBB Tampa Pro Bodybuilding Weekly Championships will be intact just as its inaugural season with IFBB open men, IFBB 202 lb. men and IFBB open women bodybuilding in conjunction with the NPC Tim Gardner Extravaganza Bodybuilding, Fitness, Figure & Bikini Championships.

After careful discussion with Mr. Manion, his vote of confidence and the strong support from siouxcountry.com and unrealmuscle.com, I decided to reinstate the female portion and bring it back stronger for the athletes and fans alike. We have increased the prize money and added two more places to our contest as such:

1st - $5,000 *
2nd - $3,000 *
3rd - $1,500 *
4th - $1,000
5th - $500
* Olympia qualification

There will also be a best poser award of $500.

This is a true testament to our bodybuilding community supporting its sport of passion without segregation of its forms of disciplines. This is short of being unbelievable, especially in spite of our current economic environment. I cannot speak highly enough of the positive impact that siouxcountry.com & unrealmuscle.com have placed on our entire sport and not just for the love of female bodybuilding but the love of our organization(s). This will set a new precedence of enthusiasm and pride that will hopefully be contagious for all of our IFBB shows, the platform for our champion athletes.

This alone should show you that as long as there are fans out there, then this sport will continue to live. Yes, it's just one event, but usually it's one event that sparks something bigger and better. Who knows what this will lead to in the future? Hopefully better things.

The economy has not been kind to the world as of late, and the world of muscle is no exception. The Tampa Pro Women's Bodybuilding show has been canceled for this year, leaving the number of women's bodybuilding shows to just 2 pro shows, if they want to qualify for the Olympia. That's it. As fans, supporters, and fellow competitors, we've got to unite as one and show the people that we care.

Siouxcountry has once again showed why they are true innovators of female muscle support by starting a fund for the show's promoter, Tim Gardner. He needs $12,000 by December to bring back women's pro bodybuilding to Tampa 2010. As of this writing, Siouxcountry members have donated $1850 to the fund. Yours truly will be donating to the cause over the year as well. My 2009 Ms. International Review (Iris Reclaims Her Throne)

With a different hairstyle and a more streamlined look yet with unrivaled conditioning, Iris Floyd Kyle redeemed herself from last year's fiasco as she won her fourth Ms. International championship. The minute she step on stage during prejudging, there was no denying that she would go on to win the event, and sure enough, she did. Debi Laszewski came in at an all-time best, placing in the runner-up spot. With this move, she has put herself in a spot to be one serious contender for a major title. Last year's champion, Yaxeni Oriquen-Garcia placed third this year. Heather Armbrust showed that you can't keep a good woman down, as she placed fourth after a disappointing finish in last year's Olympia. Dayana Cadeau's combination of muscle and grace was enough for her to get a fifth-place finish. Betty Adkins would wind up winning sixth place, proving her recent success was no fluke. All six are now eligible to compete for the Ms. Olympia title in September.

Now for the rest of the competitors:

I personally thought Isabelle Turell had a great Arnold debut and could have easily been top-six material. Just a little more time, and she will definitely be a top contender, without question. Cathy and Dr. Dena looked pretty good as well. Maria Gomez may have placed last, but there may have not been a thicker competitor on stage. She has a LOT of muscle mass, but I thought she carried it well.

Well...it's just about here. The Arnold Classic is just days away, and for the ladies, this will be the official kickoff of the competition season. If you're not in the least bit excited about this contest, then you're probably halfway in a coma. Many interested scenarios will be taking place in Columbus, Ohio this weekend.

For Ms. International, Yaxeni will be looking to defend her title and rewrite her name in the history books, and Iris will look to avenge her controversial loss last year. Like a true champion, Iris came back strong later on in the year and won her fourth Ms. Olympia title, and Betty Viana-Adkins emerged as a serious threat to a major title when she placed second at the O. Something's gotta give.

The Fitness International will see a new champion crown, as Kim Scheideler (2007-2008 Champion) has retired from competition, leaving a new champion to be crowned. Jenny Hendershott has emerged as the one to beat, as she will be in front of her home crowd. However, there are those such as Julie Palmer and Tracey Greenwood, who had their best years to date last year. Tanji and Regaine have been itching to be among the top three, and others such as Heidi and Mindi have made major strides over the last couple of years. If there's any place for someone to step up, it will be the fitness division.

The Figure International will also be one to watch, as Gina Aliotti (defending champion) is an odds-on favorite to repeat as champion, with the 2008 Figure Olympia Champion Jennifer Gates bowing out of the competition. For those that are keeping score, this contest will be just about one year ago that the new figure guidelines, so this will make it the first time the figure guidelines will take place at the Arnold. Judging by the physiques that were judged, will Gina repeat? She does have something big going for her, both Jenny Lynn and Mary Lado (the other Figure International Champions) have won back-to-back Arnold. But with Zivele, Felicia, Adela, Monica, Juliana and Erin (among others) competitng, this won't be an easy feat.

Look for my predictions on the pros sometime Tuesday.

The Arnold Amateur will see up-and coming stars compete, as well as the debut of the much anticipated bikini division. There's been a lot of talk about this division, both good and bad. This weekend, all the talk (or most of it anyways) will be put to rest as we see what bodies are presented on stage and what bodies get judges. All in all, this is one Arnold that is a can't-miss event. Unfortunatley for me, yours truly won't be able to attend the show, so the webcast will have to do. To everyone that is going to the show, have fun, be safe, meet some new friends, and make this a trip you will never forget.

Black History Spotlight for February 27, 2009-Dre' Dillard

Dre' Dillard is a no nonsense woman when it comes to competition and training clients in the Dallas area. For her, bodybuilding is a way of life. Like most that compete in this sport, she feels that bodybuilding is something that you have to be absolutely in love with in order to do well. There's no "maybe I like it, maybe I don't" attitude about the sport; either you love it or you don't. While she is a trainer, she also holds a Masters Degree in Management, which says a lot about her. She felt like the corporate America scene wasn't in her best interests, so she decided to do competitions and personal training, which has been very good to her so far.

Black History Spotlight for February 24, 2009-Monique Hayes

Monique Hayes is a multi-talented competitor. She earned a scholarship to The Ohio State University. where she became one of the best triple jumpers in the country. She now resides in Atlanta, GA and is a fitness trainer, motivator, bodybuilder and world record power-lifter. She is one of the ATL's premier female fitness professionals. She helps prepare clients for bodybuilding and fitness shows as well as personal training and health and fitness regimens. She enjoys the challenge of creating effective workout routines that fit in with a person's unique lifestyle, schedule, and needs. In addition to what she does, she is also a mother, which according to her is The most important title that she could hold in life.

Black History Spotlight for February 23, 2009-Cassandra Floyd

Believe it or not, Cassandra Floyd has been competing for quite some time now. Her first competition was in 1989, where she competed in the NPC Midsouth Bodybuilding contest. She entered her first national show in 1991, where she competed in the Jr. USAs. She placed thrid in the lightweight division. At that time, she felt like she was too small to compete with the big girls, so she started to compete in different divisions, such as the NGA (National Gym Association) and the WNBF (World Natural Bodybuilding Federation). She would win titles from those divisions before returning to the NPC after not being recognized as a top bodybuilder or model. All the hard work would pay off in 2008, as she earned her IFBB pro card, and will now be competing with the best the world has to offer.

Black History Spotlight for February 22, 2009-Carrie Ann Simmons

Carrie Ann Simmons is an NPC female bodybuilder. She began weight training when she was about to graduate from college. Before college, she wasn't the sporty type. She was more into the arts, especially playing the violin and saxophone. She began getting physical during her college days, where she took up kickboxing. She entered the gym with encouragement from a friend, and from that point on, she hasn't looked back. She competed in fitness for a bit, but now she's competing in bodybuilding in hopes of getting a pro card some day.

Black History Spotlight for February 20, 2009-Heather Foster

Heather Foster hails from the island of Jamacia, mon (Sorry, I couldn't resist, LOL.). She was born in Kingston, Jamaica, West Indies and was someone who wasn't a "girly-girl", meaning that she would like to play sports as opposed to being in the Girl Scouts. Like many competitors, she was always an active person, especially in high school and college. Heather has been competing for nearly two decades, turning pro at the 2000 NPC Nationals in New York. In addition to competitng, she does her own music arrangements, voice-overs, choreography, training, and contest preparation for regional, national and professional bodybuilders as well as being a regional judge. She want to continue all of that, as well as win a Ms. Olympia title, as well as be a influental part in bring respect back to women's bodybuilding.

Black History Spotlight for February 18, 2009-Kim Perez

Kim Perez is one HUGE female bodybuilder. Known for her massive size, she has gained quite a following in such a short amount of time. Minus her first (and so far only) Arnold Classic in 2007, she had placed in the top ten in each of her pro contest, and in the top three in her contest last year. Many are saying that she could be a top contender for the Ms. International and Ms. Olympia titles one day. With her recent streak of luck, she just might find herself with the big girls sooner rather than later.
